Chapter Thirty-Nine
Abby
âI think someone is following us,â says Jared.
âMaybe itâs him,â I say. âWe should give him the box.â
âI think these people have followed us from Mariaâs house.â
I twist around in my seat and see close behind us is a blue van. Itâs difficult to see the driver.
Weâre close to home but instead of turning into our road Jared takes us down a narrow country lane. He takes the bends so fast that I have to clutch the door handle to stop myself being thrown forward.
âItâs still behind us,â says Jared, pushing his foot down harder on the accelerator. We screech around another bend and I squeeze my eyes shut. An oncoming car hoots at us. Suddenly we are back on the main road. Jared weaves dangerously in and out of traffic in an attempt to lose the blue van but it stays with us. Iâm blinded by the glare of oncoming headlights. Jared is pushing the engine to its limits. I glance at the speedometer. Weâre doing 60 miles an hour. Adrenalin pumps through me. We swerve around a Mini at an insane speed. Ahead of us are traffic lights.
âJared,â I scream.
The lights are red, but he doesnât slow down. They turn green as we reach them, and I cry with relief. We are now on another country lane and heading towards home. The blue van is no longer behind us.
âItâs gone,â I say, but Jared doesnât slow down.
I turn back to the front and am about to breathe a sigh of relief when I see the police car coming towards us. Jared obviously doesnât see it and overtakes the car in front. I open my mouth to scream but nothing comes out. Iâm frozen with fear. Jared sees the police car too late. He swerves to avoid it. Thereâs a terrible thud and the scraping of metal against metal before the car finally comes to a stop embedding itself in a ditch. Iâm thrown against the door and pain jars through my shoulder. My only thought is the box. Iâm paralysed with fear at losing it.
âAre you alright?â asks Jared, leaning over me.
A policeman jumps down into the ditch and opens my door.
âIâm fine,â I say.
âAre you okay sir,â asks the policeman.
âYes,â says Jared. âWe were â¦â
âI really think we should get you both checked over,â says the policeman. âYou can explain why you were speeding later.â
